How Mistakes are Repeated

Often times, we are shielded from the truth in an attempt to protect us. But does shielding children from the dangers and low points in life and history actually benefit children? It actually harms children and encourages them to be ignorant to the wrongs that have been done. Students should be exposed to and know the real truths of life. Then, they would be aware of the consequences wrong
actions have; they would be better suited to avoid wrong actions and learn to avoid certain mistakes.

History is an important subject that we can learn from and if it is hidden, people won't know what mistakes to not repeat. Learning from past mistakes is important because it ensures that these mistakes will not repeat themselves in the future, and won't lead to the same dangerous consequences.

The history teacher tell his students, "the Ice Age was really just the Chilly Age, a period of a million years when everyone had to wear sweaters...the Enola Gay dropped one tiny atom on Japan" (Collins). Despite the history teacher shielding the children from the atrocities of history in an attempt to retain their innocence, the children bully each other on the playground. However, the history teacher is completely oblivious to the fact that the children's behavior on the playground is aggressive and hostile. The teacher walks by the misbehaved children and only wonders about whether the students bought his lies about history. He does nothing to stop the children and just walks past them. If children were taught the correct history, the children most likely wouldn't have behaved this way and would've learned valuable lessons from history that they would incorporate into their own character.

Every point in history offers something for us to learn from. The dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan encourages us to think of the consequences of an action before we act upon it and to consider the effects our actions will have on others.

Often times, we are ignorant to the things around us. We are so involved in our own lives that we don't think to recognize what others are going through. Because of this, we don't make any efforts to help others or to understand their troubles. However, just because we ignore problems, these problems don't go away and if not acted on early enough, these problems can spiral out of control. Just because the history teacher ignored his student's misbehavior, doesn't mean they stopped bullying each other. If he doesn't correct them now, the students will never know that they are wrong and will continue to behave this way.

  1. I really like how you talked about the examples in the poem and explained how it changed the way we live. Without history, students wouldn't be able to mature and advance in life. The students are misinformed and act certain ways because of the mistakes they've never learned. History shows all the rights and wrongs, and it's really important to know how events and people learn from their actions and allow us to live peacefully today.

  2. I thought it was really interesting that you not only talked about the morality of such situations, but how you tied it into real-life experiences and what we have to learn from them. It's important to have context for actions in our lives so that we can establish a difference between right and wrong; beneficial and detrimental. Additionally, I liked how you emphasized the fact that our actions may not turn out to be how we wanted and that we should be cautious when making such important choices.
